100% mohair from one year old doe Navikara, not quite as "strong" as the 50-50, but more luxurious. 54 yards, 2.7 oz, dk weight size 3 (12 wraps per inch). Please note, while there are few things as luxurious as 100% mohair from a 1 year old doe, this yarn is more delicate than the 50/50 with a lambswook core, and the mohair lockspun over the top. Because it is appropriate to knit or crochet with locks that aren't even spun together, it should be a problem in the finished product, but if you find the yarn breaking as you knit, tie the ends together and all should be well. If you want all the luxury of the 100% mohair in a stronger yarn, choose the lockspun 50/50 with a lambswool core. I have a soft spot for the 100% mohair, especially Navikara's 1 year old fleece (which this is). There is no fiber more wonderful than this particular fleece... period. Even my other 1 year old doe, though wonderful, just isn't quite as amazing.
Blazing Sunset lockspun 100% mohair
All of our yarn pricing is standardized. We don't charge for the time or supplies spent hand dying or hand painting (though that feels like one of the most truly artistic parts). We came up with a standardized model that seems to cover everything, and be fair. The formula is below-
cost of fiber (in oz's) + spinning rate (per yard) = cost of yarn
Though most of the fiber comes from our animals, we spend hours washing and preparing it, and raising the animals. We use "fair market value" if we were to buy the raw fiber in roving to determine the "value". The spinning rate is based on a $10 per hour rate... if I was up to speed (I am still a bit slow). The lock spinning rate is significantly more, because it is a real bear to spin and takes at least 3-4 times the amount of time per yard. I don't double the 2-ply rate, though I should, so consider it a 2 ply discount.
If you want to order fiber for your own project, or want something custom made... here is the "key" to our formula
Fiber cost-
- Angora (rabbit)= $10/oz
- Mohair (angora goat)= $5/oz premium fleece, $8/oz perfect locks
- Baby Alpaca $6/oz
- Lambswool or wool $2.50/oz
Spinning cost-
- 1 ply 10 cents per yard = $10/100 yds
- 2 ply $16/100 yards (2 ply discount)
- Lock Spun 30 cents per yard
Please expect natural variations in all our products. We are not a factory, we may package something different one time than another because of what we have available. We do our best to produce the highest possible quality products. This does not mean there will never be a lump in the yarn (because I hit a squib while spinning, though I try to get all those out), or a little vegetable matter, or hand written labels if we were out of printer ink, or recycled packaging for shipping. We are sustainably minded and do our best. If you are really dis-satisfied with a product, please let us know and we will do our best to give store credit or replace the item as needed.
